Sign In. Slow Burn Hide Spoilers. I rented this on New Year's Eve to counter the boredom of Bowl games, and found the movie to be surprisingly good. There was a compelling and believable storyline think of "Body Heat" set in a contemporary northeastern city instead of lazy Miami , it was well acted and a real thriller. I also liked that the movie didn't shy away from comments however simplistic about race.

In initially turning the project down, without reading it, I wondered when would it end, this ruining of classic texts by teening them down? There had been the successes, beginning in with ''Clueless,'' based on Jane Austen's novel ''Emma,'' but many subsequent adaptations of literature typified the film industry's appetite for soullessly copying previous hits. When I finally did agree at least to read ''O,'' I found Brad Kaaya's script as provocative as it was challenging, setting myself and many others who would work on the film on the strange journey of making ''O'' and then navigating it toward release. Though I'd decided to direct the film, which will open Friday after a one-and-a-half year delay caused by qualms over its subject matter, its conceptual liability remained: it was still another Shakespeare-set-in-high-school film. What distinguished this adaptation, however, was that it would be from a tragedy, not a comedy or romance, and that tragedies of similar scale had been occurring in American high schools with chilling frequency. There were five shootings in the year or so leading up to photography on ''O,'' and the names of the schools' towns had become shorthand for what seemed an epidemic of teenage violence: Jonesboro, Pearl, Eugene, Springfield, Edinboro.

Originally to be directed by Martin Scorsese who opted to make Casino instead, the film version of Richard Price's meticulously researched novel Clockers, was taken over at Scorsese's suggestion by Spike Lee. Clockers was adapted by Price himself for the screen before Lee radically reworked Price's screenplay. The story has been relocated from the fictional New Jersey town in Price's novel to a rundown Brooklyn neighbourhood, and the film takes its title from the slang term for the lowest level of drug dealer, the type who are on the streets around the clock. The redoubtable Harvey Keitel stars in Clockers as a cynical homicide detective investigating the murder of a Brooklyn drug dealer.
